SAP Note 13023 - Why was a BOM not exploded?

Symptom:

Key word: MD02/MD03/MD11/ME21/ME22/ME51/ME52
The relevant bill of material (BOM) was not exploded or found for a planned order or when creating or changing a subcontract order item or purchase requisition item in the planning run.

Cause and prerequisites

There are various reasons that could lead to the BOM not being exploded:

    • No BOM exists whose area of validity and validity period matches the explosion date. Here, it should be noted that the explosion date is the start date of the planned order.
    • The explosion for the start date was overridden in Customizing or the planned order has a BOM explosion number.
    • The BOM is a multiple BOM. However, the lot-size area is not maintained.
      Background info: the lot-size area must be maintained for multiple BOMs, but it is not necessary to maintain a lot-size area for simple BOMs.
      If a simple BOM without a defined lot-size area is converted into a multiple BOM by creating a new alternative, then this BOM is no longer valid.
      As of Release 3.0 another selection rule is valid:
      For multiple BOMs, an alternative without lot-size area is valid.
    • In Customizing for MRP (Transaction OS38), no selection ID or an incorrect selection ID has been maintained for the BOM explosion (table T399D).
    • The BOM has been allocated a BOM status that is set in customizing (Transaction OS38) in such a way that the BOM is not active for the planning run.
    • The BOM contains no components that are relevant to production.
    • No suitable alternative BOM exists for the selection procedure specified in the material master record (according to order quantity/explosion date/production version).
    • For BOM selection using the the production version, note 39032 should be observed if the production version is created by a customer report instead of using SAP standard methods.
    • For variants ('stockable types')
      The variant must be assigned a configurable material and a valuation in the material master record.
      The variant must be assigned a BOM of the configurable material (menu: BOM -> Material BOM -> Assignment conf.material)
Solution

Check:

    • Validity period of the BOM and the start date of the planned order
    • Explosion control in Customizing, Transaction OMIW
    • Does the planned order have a BOM explosion number, Transaction MD13
    • In the material master record: the procedure for selecting the alternative BOM ("Alternative BOM" field on MRP 2 screen)
    • Depending on the selection procedure:
      + whether the BOM is a multiple BOM (see header data - "Technical type")
      If so, is the lot-size area suitable for the BOM?
      + the production version of the material in the planned order and in the material master record
    • The selection ID in customizing for MRP
      Menu: Customizing -> Configuration -> Logistics -> Production
      -> MRP -> MRP data/procedures -> Planning run
      -> In-house production -> BOM/routing selection
    • For variants (stockable types): Assignment to BOM of the configurable material.
You can directly start the explosion in the order proposal (planned order to replicate the problem. Another possibility is to newly create a planned order (Transaction MD11) without saving afterwards.

If you cannot determine the source of the problem, take note of the settings checked (a printout of the screen "Display BOM - header: quantity/longtext" is helpful) and send the problem to the SAP Hotline.
