Solution
The 'proper' way to download depends on what you want to get.

When the contents of a spool request is viewed with transaction SP01, it is processed for display.

As most SP01 users read only the first few pages, the transaction does not output a long request completely. Please see the online documentation on how to alter the page display settings in the various releases. In releases prior to 46B, the maximum value for displaying ABAP lists was limited.

As of Release 4.6B, you can download the complete contents of spool request without displaying it first (SP01 -> Spool request -> Forward -> Export as text).

If you want to do further processing with the contents of the spool request, the best way is following: define a new output device type. Then you get as much control about the formatting as we implemented to handle the various kinds of printer types. Then modify the host spool command so that it puts the data file where you want to get it. See note 6753 for details.
