SAP Note 12131 - STORAGE parameters for making tables smaller

Symptom

Extents allocated to a table / index cannot be released again.

Cause and prerequisites

ORACLE does not allow allocated extents to be released.

Solution

Enter the table or index name with transaction DB02, button (Tables and Indexes) Detailed Analysis. In the next screen, press the "Analyze" pushbutton and then press "Detailed Analysis" in the popup. After a short time you receive a list of the STORAGE parameters with the allocated and used area.

Reorganize the table with SAPDBA and change the STORAGE parameters at the same time. Enter the used area plus 5% as the INITIAL EXTENT, and then approx. 10% of the INITIAL extent as the NEXT EXTENT. Proceed in the same way for the respective indexes.

After the reorganization, the extents that were allocated too much are again free.
