The note is divided into three sections:

* Section 1 provides some general information about subjects such as
"NT/Unix Combinations" or "Using Different Operating System
Releases".

* Section 2 shows a table, which defines the R/3 kernels released
with an R/3 release, as well as possible existing restrictions.

* Section 3 shows another table, which defines the operating system
and database releases that are released with an R/3 kernel.

Note that not all the DB and OS combinations listed in this note are released for all mySAP.com components.
mySAP.com components such as BW, APO, BBP, CRM, and so on, are based on the SAP Basis / SAP kernel technology. However, they have their own DB and OS platform releases. For further information about these platform releases, also refer to the above-mentioned link.

General information:

a) NT/Unix Combinations

NT/Unix combinations with Informix are released by SAP as of Release 3.1H, providing the hardware partners concerned support the installation of a common file system under both operating systems.

b) Unix/Unix Combinations

The combination of application servers with Unix operating systems from different producers is supported.

c) Using Different Operating System Releases

The operating system releases may be different both between the application server and database server and between the individual application servers.

However, the R/3 kernel used must be identical on all application servers and on the database server. Refer to table 2 for all operating system releases that are released for an R/3 kernel.

This regulation permits a "rolling upgrade", that is, the upgrade between database and application servers and in the application servers themselves is separated.

d) Support Packages on Windows NT

Read Note 30478 "Support Packs on Windows NT" to choose Support Packages on Windows NT.

1. Released SAP R/3 Releases and R/3 Kernels

-----------------------------------------

We recommend that you always use the latest released R/3 kernel.

Example:

In table 1, you can see that the R/3 Release 3. 0F can be operated with kernel 3.1H.

In table 2, you can see that R/3 kernel 3.1H is released with system HP-UX 10.20 and the database INFORMIX 7.23.UC3.

The following software combination is permitted:

R/3 Release: 3.0F

R/3 Kernel: 3.1H

Database Release: INFORMIX 7.23.UC3

Operating System Release: HP-UX 10.20

Remark:
=======
Make sure that the operating system and database versions used on your SAP servers are fully supported by the relevant manufacturer. Otherwise, if problems occur during a required DB or OS upgrade, it may not be possible to obtain an immediate solution. Messages from Transaction SICK such as "release xxx is not supported with this kernel" indicate that either

your DB or OS version is no longer supported by the manufacturer, or

you need a current SAP kernel patch which includes a newly certified version.

1. This database release will no longer be supported as of the year 2000. SAP kernel patches based on this database release will only be available until end of 3Q 1999. Please, be also aware that as of the year 2000 the 3.1I downward compatible kernel will be the minimal SAP supported kernel, i.e. no lower R/3 kernels will be supported.

2. Starting 4Q 1999 the minimal operating system release will be AIX 4.1.5 This comment applies only if the specific R/3 kernel, database, and AIX release combination is still supported.
