SAP Note 18957 - Entering a division

Symptom:

You enter a division when maintaining a material master record. In SAP Releases 2.1 and 2.2, you then see an error message telling you that the division entered is not allowed since this would result in an invalid sales area.

As of Release 3.0, this error message no longer appears. The system no longer checks whether the division, the sales organization, and the distribution channel together form a valid sales area.

Cause and prerequisites

Cause for the error message in Release 2.1 or 2.2:
For all combinations of sales organization and distribution channel for which material master data is maintained, the program checks whether the sales areas are defined for the division entered.

This check has been deactivated in Release 3.0 to allow the sales area for which you enter an order to be handled independently of the divisions of the article items.

Background information:
When you create an order, the system checks the sales area on the initial screen. However, it is not necessary for the divisions of the order items to form a valid sales area in combination with the sales organization and the distribution channel because SD processing does not require a sales area to run correctly.

Another reason for deactivating this check has been that the division of a material is not defined per sales organization and distribution, but is valid client-wide. Otherwise you would have to define a valid sales area in Customizing for each combination of sales organization and distribution channel for which the material is valid.

Solution
You can make an advance correction (if you are using Release 2.1 or 2.2) by deactivating (marking with asterisks) the command "MODULE MARA-SPART." in the flow logic of screens SAPMM03M/200, 210, and 215.
